National Institute of Health data show:

  • More than 50% of truck drivers are obese.
  • The prevalence of diabetes is 50% higher than the general population.
  • 87% of truck drivers have hypertension or pre-hypertension, compared to the national average of 58.3%.

According to the American Journal of Industrial Medicine (Am J Ind Med. 2014 Jun;57(6):615-26. doi: 10.1002/ajim.22293. Epub 2014 Jan 4.):

  • 69% of long haul truck drivers were considered to be clinically obese.
  • 61% of long haul truck drivers were reported to have two or more of the excess weight related preventable conditions: hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, no physical activity, 6 or fewer hours of sleep per 24-hr period.

  • Approximately 1/4th of the U.S. commercial truck drivers on America’s roads suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, resulting in a crash risk up to 11 times higher than among non-commercial truck drivers.
  • Roughly seven in 10 long-haul truck drivers are clinically obese, two times more than other adult workers in the U.S.
  •  A Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) case study issued last year examined the connection between truck driver body mass index (BMI) and fatigue also revealed that obese drivers are more likely to be involved in safety critical events than average weight counterparts.
  • Medical and workers’ compensation claims pertaining to vehicle accidents cost nearly twice as much as the average work-related injury claim.
