About the artist

Michael Guttman

michael_2010I was raised in southern California where my exposure to the vast and varied magnificence of the oceans, mountains, and deserts, along with the diversity and beauty of plant life awakened a sort of visual curiosity inside of me. I purchased my first camera when I was in my late twenties, and it was at that time I felt a shift in how I saw the world around me – it was like having a new pair of eyes. I began to see things on a much more personal and organic level – the details hidden inside a flower, the multitude of colors and patterns in a sunset, how the changing light affected the contrast and depth in the landscape, the effect water had on rock formations, the world of architecture: harbors, towns, homes, as unique as the people who inhabit them. All of these things had a new energy when I viewed them through the lenses of my camera.

Over 20 years ago I moved to northern New Mexico where I have continued to be inspired by light, color and landscape. Traveling extensively has also heightened my awareness of the diverse nature of the world. It also increased my desire to share the beauty I have found in my travels, and this is where my photographic passions currently thrive.

I still take most of my photos with my 35mm Nikon FM film camera using both print and slide film. I usually carry a 28 – 80mm zoom lens and a 55mm fixed focal length lens when I go out shooting. I also have a 20mm fixed focal length lens and an 80 – 210mm zoom lens that I use. A couple of years ago I purchased my first digital camera – a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS. My exploration into the world of digital photography continues with my most recent purchase, a Nikon D90 DSLR camera with an 18 – 105mm zoom lens.

You can see more of my work at the Gallery/Studio space I share with my wife, Judy Terra, in Taos. Please call for hours or to schedule an appointment. Or stop by my booth at one of the shows I’m doing this year.
