The group\u2019s track \u2018Stefania\u2019 is an ode to powerful mothers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/ukrainian-eurovision-entry-kalush-orchestra-interview-russia-war-stefiana-song-lyrics-meaning-3222586\">Speaking to <em>NME<\/em> this week<\/a>, Psiuk explained how their taking part was a \u201chuge responsibility\u201d, given the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/bloom-twins-khrystyna-soloviy-ukraine-russia-war-crisis-music-aid-protest-3170100\">ongoing war with Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo represent Ukraine in the international arena is always a responsibility, but to represent it during the war is just the highest responsibility possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe song [&#8216;Stefania&#8217;] was composed and dedicated to my mother, but after the war the song has acquired lots of nuances because a lot of people are perceiving it as if Ukraine is my mother,\u201d said Psiuk. \u201cThat\u2019s why the song has become so close to the Ukrainian people, and it is in the Ukrainian hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watch <em>NME<\/em>&#8216;s full video interview with Kalush Orchestra&#8217;s Oleh Psiuk below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"jwplayer-video-nJ6TL9xt\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/russia-no-longer-allowed-to-compete-in-eurovision-2022-following-ukraine-invasion-3169684\">Russia was banned from competing in this year\u2019s competition<\/a>\u00a0following backlash to an earlier statement from organisers saying the country would be allowed to compete despite launching a military assault on Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/italian-eurovision-winners-maneskin-drugs-new-music-tour-james-newman-interview-2949022\">Last year\u2019s Eurovision was won<\/a>\u00a0by the Italian band\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/maneskin\">M\u00e5neskin<\/a>, who have gone on to achieve international success, with highlights including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/maneskin-get-mick-jaggers-seal-of-approval-after-supporting-the-rolling-stones-3090072\">supporting The Rolling Stones in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/ukraine-among-10-nations-to-progress-from-first-eurovision-semi-final-3223076\">Ukraine among 10 nations to progress from first Eurovision semi-final<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\">NME<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine&#8217;s Kalush Orchestra are among the 10 nations to have progressed from the first semi-final of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.
