When he was asked: \u2018What would it mean to be inducted?\u2019, he replied: \u2018I\u2019d be wondering what we did wrong\u2019,\u201d Mothersbaugh told <em>NME<\/em>. \u201cBut the reality is the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is bigger than just being about the most obvious traits of rock and roll \u2013 it also includes concepts and ideas that changed rock and roll.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cAt the risk of being immodest, I think Devo \u2013 bigger than our record sales \u2013 had an influence on the aesthetic and trajectory of rock and roll, so it would be nice to be recognised.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Devo - Whip It (Official Music Video) | Warner Vault\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j_QLzthSkfM?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>As might be expected from a group known for their absurdist humour and surrealist theatricality, Mothersbaugh quipped that Devo would have an unusual way of celebrating if they\u2019re inducted to the pop pantheon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is in Cleveland, and Ohio\u2019s great because they have really relaxed burial rules,&#8221; he told <em>NME<\/em>. &#8220;You could have your grandpa buried in your back, or even your front, yard if you want. So if we get inducted, I\u2019m going to buy a property right next door to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame \u2013 maybe even just one parking space \u2013 and have all of Devo buried there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/eminem\">Eminem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/kate-bush\">Kate Bush<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/beck\">Beck<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/duran-duran\">Duran Duran<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/eurythmics\">Eurythmics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/lionel-riche\">Lionel Richie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/rage-against-the-machine\">Rage Against The Machine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/JUDAS-PRIEST\">Judas Priest<\/a> are also among the nominees for the Class of 2022, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/dolly-parton-is-still-eligible-for-rock-roll-hall-of-fame-induction-despite-asking-to-be-withdrawn-3185183\">organisers say Dolly Parton remains eligible<\/a>, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/dolly-parton-takes-herself-out-of-the-running-for-rock-roll-hall-of-fame-3182200\">asking for her nod to be withdrawn<\/a>, explaining that she although she was \u201cextremely flattered\u201d to be considered, she hadn\u2019t \u201cearned the right\u201d for inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on Parton\u2019s request, Mothersbaugh said: \u201cI think she has as much right as a rapper would \u2013 she has every right to be there. Her music, whether she knows it or not, has a lot of rock elements in it. Credit: Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s by Mothersbaugh and fellow Kent State University art student Gerald Casale, Devo took their name from their concept of \u201cDe-Evolution\u201d, a theory that man was regressing towards dumbed-down consumerism and self-destruction \u2013 a concept he feels is more relevant than ever today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJerry and I were talking about what we were seeing in the world and decided it was not evolution, it was De-Evolution, and I was already worried about it because I had read a book in 1969 called <em>Population Bomb<\/em> [by Stanford University Professor Paul R. Ehrlich and his wife, Anne Ehrlich] which pretty accurately described what is happening in 2022,&#8221; said Mothersbaugh.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He said: &#8216;Just do the math, there\u2019s so many humans on the planet, and because humans don\u2019t have the ability to control themselves or have a good vision of who they are or how they fit into the planet, we\u2019re the unnatural species and by 2050, he predicted that a virus would wipe out humans and save the planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mothersbaugh added:\u00a0\u201cHe said the only worse thing that could happen would be we\u2019d detonate a nuclear war and kill off all the species instead of just the humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Devo - Uncontrollable Urge (Live On Fridays)\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XTNGg0Tj5Aw?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Devo are also forging ahead with talk of new music and NFTs. \u201cWe\u2019re always writing new stuff and music and talking about experiments with NFTS, which I\u2019m interested in,\u201d said Mothersbaugh. \u201cAs an artistic statement about music as you write it in a novel fashion, they intrigue me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added to that, the band are poised to play the inaugural Tony Hawk\u2019s Weekend Jam in Las Vegas from May 12-15 \u2013 a festival mixing skateboarding with performances from acts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/MODEST-MOUSE\">Modest Mouse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/descendents\">Descendents<\/a>. It had previously been announced that Mothersbaugh and pro-skateboarder Hawk had teamed up for a musical adaption of the Nick Hornby novel <em>Slam \u2013<\/em> but the musician told <em>NME<\/em> that the pair\u2019s collaboration had expanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, it\u2019s probably going to be even bigger than that [the musical],\u201d he teased. \u201cI can\u2019t talk about it right now, but it\u2019s given us the chance to hang out and do different things. Skateboarders and Devo have an affinity. When we did our <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dVGINIsLnqU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Freedom of Choice\u2019 video<\/a> [in 1980], we shot skaters in the park \u2013 and those kids were Devo fans who became famous. Tony loves that video. When he was a kid, he watched it over and over again, just to watch those guys skate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cTony Hawk just texted me to remind me we\u2019re doing something. He broke his leg, yet still walked out onstage at the Oscars.
