Skin Cancer with Dr. Andrew Ordon
Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Ordon to discuss skin cancer. Together they examine the cause of skin cancer, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with skin cancer, including insurance coverage and related costs.
In the United States today, skin cancer is the most common with more new cases each year than breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined. Because of its increase in frequency, it’s important to know the warning signs. Typically, skin cancer creates a lesion or irregular mole on the skin.
Remember your ABCs when looking for indicators of a potentially cancerous mole:
• A – Asymmetry – Is the left half different from the right half?
• B – Border – Does the border have an uneven, irregular edge?
• C – Color – Are there two or more colors?
• D – Diameter – Is the diameter greater than 6mm?
Dr. Ordon points out that surgery is the only real option when addressing skin cancer. So, prevention of this affliction is crucial in protecting yourself. Take care of your skin and keep it clean, don’t spend extended amounts of time in the sun, and always wear a broad-spectrum, UVA/UVB sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or higher.
So join us as we simplify this common and treatable disease and arm you with the tools and information you need to combat skin cancer for yourself and those you love.
