Each year 600,000 women undergo hysterectomies, the surgical removal of their uterus. Over 5 billion dollars are spent each year on this procedure. Of these, as many as 300,000 or half are due to uterine fibroids. Studies show that 20 to 30 percent of women of reproductive age have fibroids and African American women are actually 3 times morel likely to develop fibroids. Most fibroids do not cause any symptoms and many women are unaware that they have them. When fibroids become problematic, removing them by performing a procedure known as myomectomy may be necessary. Finally, as our population ages, procedures to support the vaginal canal, known as sacrocolpopexy, are becoming more common.
So join us as we simplify this disease and arm you with the tools and information you need to combat urogynecological challenges for yourself and those you love.
