Guest expert, Dr. David Hardy is the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX and completed his residency in internal medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. Early in the AIDS epidemic he sought out and completed a fellowship in infectious diseases/immunology and clinical AIDS research at the UCLA School of Medicine under the direction of Dr Michael Gottlieb, the physician who reported the first cases of AIDS. Later he also completed post-doctoral training in HIV laboratory research with Irvin Chen, PhD at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Dr. Hardy has cared for persons with HIV infection since 1982 and done research on the disease since 1984 focusing initially on treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections and later on antiretroviral agents, immunotherapies and hepatitis treatments as well as on basic retroviral vector research and gene therapy. Dr. Hardy currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) and editor-in-chief of their Fundamentals of HIV Medicine for the HIV Specialist as well as on the Board of Directors of the HIV Medical Association (HIVMA). He works with several community organizations, including the Alliance for Housing and Healing (Aid for AIDS), Being Alive, Project Angel Food and AIDS Project Los Angeles.
He was honored by the Alliance for Housing and Healing (Aid for AIDS) with their Humanitarian Award in 2011, by the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) with their Clinical Trial Exceptional Service Award in 2010, and by Being Alive with their “Spirit of Hope Award” in 2007.
