Alzheimer’s Disease with Dr. David Kheradyar
Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by board certified neurologist, Dr. David Kheradyar to discuss Alzheimer’s disease. Together they examine the cause of Alzheimer’s, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with Alzheimer’s disease, including insurance coverage and related costs.
Today, as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common form of dementia among the elderly. Alzheimer’s is caused by plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. This leads to a degeneration of certain centers of the brain, primarily the ones responsible for memory.
The most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease that you should look for are:
• Memory loss that disrupts daily life
• Challenges in planning or solving problems
• Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work, or at leisure
• Confusion with time or place
• Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
• New problems with words in speaking or writing
• Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
• Decreased or poor judgment
• Withdrawal from work or social activities
• Changes in mood and personality
Dr. Kheradyar points out that it is the patient’s family members and those that are closest to them that usually notice the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but with early detection you can get the maximum benefit of treatments that help delay the advancement of the condition.
